Prussia‘s kings left their mark on Potsdam. 17 palaces and palatial buildings define the image of Potsdam. In 1991, Potsdam‘s cultural landscape with its palaces, the three historic parks “Sanssouci”, “Neuer Garten” and “Babelsberg”, and the Russian Colony Alexandrowka were bestowed the valuable title of UNESCO World Heritage. Old and New – an exciting blend: Potsdam is a city in motion. Typical baroque houses characterise the town centre between the Dutch Quarter and Brandenburg Gate. The traditional Hans Otto Theatre and other sites of cultural interest are located in the cultural venue “Schiffbauergasse”. The home of Germany‘s oldest film museum is in Potsdam‘s historic centre, in the former royal stables, the “Marstall”. It presents valuable testimony of German film history. Potsdam is the ideal place for it, because the birthplace of the German film industry is in Potsdam-Babelsberg. Filmpark Babelsberg provides a look behind the scenes of film and television. And what would Potsdam be without its water landscape? From Berlin‘s Wannsee lake to the waters surrounding town of Brandenburg an der Havel, one lake streches out after another and, together with the Potsdam and Brandenburg Havel lakes, they form one of the most beautiful and varied water sports areas in Europe.
